Streaming Mobile Video is Becoming the Norm For US and Indonesian Consumers

According to market research, and a study undertaken by consulting firm, Park Associates: “Nearly 50% of smartphone owners in US broadband households stream video on their phone, which in turn is creating more demand for high-speed mobile connections as the industry prepares to shift to 5G network infrastructure” [1].

Kristen Hanich, Parks Associate's research analyst. commented on the fact that "video streaming is increasingly common among mobile consumers" [1], and along with other smartphone activities that are now commonplace, consumers' data requirements are becoming substantial. Telcoms in the US and many other regions in the world now have a greater incentive than in the past for signing up new customers. Further, when compared to 2015 figures, according to a recent Parks Associates study, there is a clear price jump for for monthly mobile services that American broadband households now have to pay.

Hanich noted that: "The resurgence of unlimited data plans has been successful in getting consumers to upgrade their service" [1]. Moreover, service providers offer different types of attractive, practical data packages that give users unlimited data, and incorporate different levels of streaming quality and data speeds. Moreover, as Hanich notes: “as the race to 5G heats up, network capabilities will also become increasingly important in the battle for consumers" [1], and although telcoms are ferociously poaching users away from their rivals, they are nonetheless, slowly draining their ‘levers’ which convince users to switch. Parks Associates anticipates a strategy which will focus on consumer retention as opposed to user acquisition.

Telkom Indonesia - A Case In Point

Telkom Indonesia is renowned as Indonesia's biggest telecommunication and network provider. It is the Telkom Group's parent company, and is actively involved in a huge range of businesses including multimedia and telecommunications. It is majority owned by the government of Indonesia, and in terms of Indonesia's mobile phone subscribers, boasts a predominate market share. Moreover, in terms of market capitalization, it is one of the country's largest companies [2].

Telkom Indonesia's impressive spectrum of telecommunication and network services include: cellular services, interconnection and network services, and data and internet communication services. Further, it offers IT and e-Payment enabler services, as well as leading entertainment and media, such as that provided by their 2017 partnership with OONA, the cutting-edge AVOD OTT entertainment and messaging platform. Moreover, due to its subsidiary company, Telkomsel Telkom Indonesia, stands as one of the top Indonesian companies which is able to benefit from the nation's highly profitable telecommunication industry. In fact: “the large and young population, in combination with its rising per capita GDP, are reasons that Indonesia is one of the world’s most crowded telecommunication markets” [2].

Mobile is the Name of the Game

As the fourth most populous country on earth, Indonesia poses a large and fast-growing market for mobile technologies” [3]

Indonesians are unique due to the fact that they primarily use smart phones for their communication needs and access to the internet. Moreover, Statistica predicts that by 2019, there will be 193.4 million mobile phone users [3]. As can be expected: “a number of companies [in Indonesia], are in fierce competition for market shares. Competition has brought tariffs for mobile phone services down significantly, while a new group of subscribers (from the poorer segments of society) have limited spending capacity” [2].

OONA and Telkom Indonesia Offer Free Mobile TV

OONA goes beyond TV and OTT – it is a world 1st Free Entertainment & Messaging platform which gives users a cool way of choosing, sharing and editing their fab entertainment and ads”

Now, OONA empowers them with all the television they could ever desire, all in one place. In the case of OONA's partnership with Telkom Indonesia, viewers are even rewarded with tcoins, a virtual currency which they can earn for watching TV, sharing video ads, and engaging with other users and the helpful world first, AI Genie in the OONA App, Siskabot, who appears in person when the OONA app is downloaded.
